Make the Most of Your Japanese Nail Experience
Getting your nails done in Japan can be one of the highlights of your trip – if you know what to expect. Here are 10 essential tips for tourists.
Tip 1: Book in Advance
Japanese salons operate by reservation. Book at least 2-3 days ahead, or earlier for weekends.
Tip 2: Use Instagram for Booking
DMs are easier than phone calls, especially if you don’t speak Japanese. Many salons respond to English messages.
Tip 3: Save Reference Photos
Pictures communicate better than words. Save 3-5 designs you like on your phone.
Tip 4: Arrive 5 Minutes Early
Japanese culture values punctuality. Late arrivals may have shortened appointments or be turned away.
Tip 5: Know That Tipping Isn’t Expected
Unlike Western countries, tipping is not customary in Japan. The price includes everything.

Tip 6: Confirm the Total Price
Before your appointment starts, make sure you understand the total cost. Ask ‘Ikura desu ka?’ (How much?) if needed.
Tip 7: Bring Cash
Some salons are cash-only. NURU NAIL accepts cards, but it’s good to have yen just in case.
Tip 8: Remove Existing Gel Before Arriving
If you have gel nails, mention this when booking. Removal (off) costs extra and takes additional time.
Tip 9: Speak Up During the Process
If something isn’t right, politely mention it. Gestures work: thumbs up for ‘good,’ shake your head for ‘no.’
Tip 10: Enjoy the Experience!
Japanese nail service is thorough and relaxing. Sit back, enjoy the attention to detail, and leave with beautiful nails.
